Picnic Bench Buying Guide for Schools & Nurseries

Buying a commercial picnic bench for a school or nursery? Safety features, age-appropriate heights, procurement tips, and what to specify.

A commercial picnic bench for a school or nursery needs to meet a higher bar than standard outdoor furniture. It must be the right height for the age group, built with rounded edges and smooth surfaces to reduce injury risk, and robust enough to withstand the way children actually use furniture - climbing on it, dropping things on it, and treating it as playground equipment. Getting the specification right at the point of purchase saves money and avoids safety concerns down the line.

This guide covers safety, sizing by age group, and the procurement process for education settings.

What schools and nurseries specifically need

School and nursery benches differ from standard commercial picnic benches in several important ways:

  • Age-appropriate seat height - adult benches are too high for primary-age children and far too high for nursery-age. A child sitting on a bench with their feet dangling is uncomfortable and more likely to fall.
  • Rounded edges - square-cut timber edges splinter and cause scrapes. Rounded or chamfered edges on all surfaces reduce the risk of cuts and grazes.
  • Smooth finish - no rough grain, no raised bolt heads, no protruding screws. Every surface a child touches should be smooth to the hand.
  • Stability - children lean, climb, and sit unevenly. The bench must be heavy enough and wide enough at the base to resist tipping under asymmetric loads.
  • Ground fixing - in a playground setting, benches should be fixed to the ground to prevent them being moved, tipped, or used as climbing apparatus in unintended ways.
  • Low maintenance - school maintenance budgets are tight. A bench that needs annual attention is acceptable; one that needs constant repair is not.

Age and height guidance for a kids picnic bench

Seat height is the single most important dimension for a childrens picnic bench. Here is a guide by age group:

| Age group | Seat height | Table height | Table length (4-seater) | Recommended for | |-----------|------------|-------------|------------------------|-----------------| | Nursery (2–4 years) | 24–28 cm | 42–46 cm | 80–90 cm | Nurseries, pre-school settings | | Reception–Year 2 (4–7 years) | 28–32 cm | 48–52 cm | 100–110 cm | Infant schools, outdoor classrooms | | Year 3–Year 6 (7–11 years) | 32–38 cm | 54–60 cm | 120–140 cm | Junior schools, primary playgrounds | | Secondary (11+ years) | 42–46 cm | 70–76 cm | 150–170 cm | Secondary schools (standard adult height) |

These heights align with general ergonomic guidance for children's seating [VERIFY: BS EN 1729 school furniture standard]. Getting the seat height right means children can sit with their feet flat on the ground, which improves posture and comfort during outdoor lessons and lunchtimes.

For mixed-age settings (whole primary school), a bench sized for Year 3–4 (seat height around 34 cm) is a reasonable compromise. Younger children's feet may not quite reach the ground, but the difference is manageable. Older children fit comfortably.

Safety features to specify

When ordering a commercial picnic bench for a school, specify the following:

Rounded edges and corners

All timber edges should be rounded to a minimum radius of 3 mm - ideally more. This applies to the tabletop edges, seat edges, and leg ends. Rounding removes the sharp arris that causes splinters and cuts.

Countersunk or capped fasteners

Bolt heads should be countersunk into the timber or capped with plastic covers so there are no metal edges above the surface. This is particularly important on seat surfaces where children sit and slide.

Non-toxic treatment

Pressure treatment should use a preservative approved for use in children's play settings [VERIFY: check current approved preservatives for playground equipment]. Older treatments containing CCA (chromated copper arsenate) are no longer permitted. Modern alternatives use copper-based preservatives that are effective and safe.

Anti-climb design

In playground settings, consider whether the bench design discourages climbing. A-frame legs with cross-bracing can become a ladder. In nursery settings, a pedestal or slab-leg design may be preferable as it offers fewer footholds.

Ground fixing

Bolt-down brackets or concrete anchors keep benches in place. This prevents children from tipping benches, and stops the bench migrating across the playground over time. We pre-drill for bolt-down fixing on all school specification benches.

Procurement and budgets for education

Buying for a school or nursery usually means navigating procurement processes that domestic purchases do not involve. Here is what to expect:

Purchase orders and invoicing

We accept purchase orders and provide full VAT invoices. This is standard for local authority, academy trust, and multi-academy trust procurement.

Budget cycles

Most schools order outdoor furniture between January and April for spring/summer installation. If your budget year-end is March, place orders in January or February to ensure delivery before the cut-off. Our standard lead time is 7 working days.

Framework agreements

Some academy trusts and local authorities procure outdoor furniture through framework agreements. If your trust has a preferred supplier list, check whether bespoke makers are eligible - we are happy to provide the documentation needed for inclusion.

Grants and funding

PTA fundraising, Sport England grants, and capital improvement budgets can all fund outdoor seating. A kids picnic bench for an outdoor classroom or sensory garden may qualify under curriculum enrichment or SEND provision budgets.

Bulk orders

Orders of 5 or more benches qualify for bulk pricing. For multi-site academy trusts ordering across several schools, we can arrange split delivery to different addresses.

We build every school bench to order from C24 construction-grade timber in our Chelmsford workshop. For standard commercial options, see our commercial and trade range. For more on children's bench sizing, see our guide to choosing the right height by age.

Frequently asked questions

What height should a school picnic bench be?

It depends on the age group. Nursery benches (ages 2–4) should have a seat height of 24–28 cm. Primary school benches for ages 7–11 should be 32–38 cm. Secondary school pupils can use standard adult-height benches with seat heights of 42–46 cm.

Are wooden picnic benches safe for schools?

Yes, when built to the right specification. Key safety features are rounded edges, countersunk fasteners, non-toxic pressure treatment, and ground fixing. A properly specified childrens picnic bench is safe for playground and outdoor classroom use.

How long do school picnic benches last?

A commercial-grade school picnic bench in pressure-treated C24 timber should last 10–15 years with minimal maintenance. Schools typically get a better lifespan than pubs because use is term-time only and benches are often on softer surfaces that reduce ground-contact moisture.

Can school benches be made to custom sizes?

Yes. Because we build to order, we can make benches to any height, length, or width to suit a specific age group, space, or accessibility requirement. This is particularly useful for SEND settings and nurseries where standard sizes may not be appropriate.

Do you deliver to schools outside Essex?

Yes. We offer delivery across Essex and beyond. For academy trusts with schools in multiple locations, we can arrange split delivery on the same run where sites are in the same region.

Benches built for the way children actually use them

Children do not sit quietly on furniture. They lean, climb, slide, and bounce. Every school bench we build accounts for that - heavy enough to stay put, smooth enough to be safe, and built from C24 construction-grade timber that handles years of daily use. Tell us the age group, the quantity, and the setting, and we will send a specification and quote.
