A small picnic table is the right choice when your outdoor space is under about 3 metres square and a full-size 6-seater would dominate the area. Compact benches seat two to four people comfortably, take up roughly half the footprint of a standard bench, and still give you a proper solid table for meals, drinks, and morning coffee outside. If your garden, patio, or courtyard is on the smaller side, you do not have to settle for a folding chair and a side table.
When small is the right size
Most gardens in Essex terraces, new-builds, and townhouses are not large. A standard 6-seater picnic bench for your garden needs about 3 m x 2 m of space including room to swing your legs over the seat. That swallows a small patio whole.
A small picnic table - typically a 2-seater or 4-seater - fits spaces that a full-size bench simply cannot. Think:
- Courtyard gardens under 3 m wide
- Balconies and raised decking areas
- Narrow side returns alongside a house
- Small pub beer gardens that need more tables, not bigger ones
- Allotment plots where a quick sit-down spot is all you need
The compact footprint also makes them easier to move for mowing, cleaning, or rearranging.
Compact picnic bench sizes
Here is how small picnic table sizes compare to standard:
| Size | Table length | Overall width | Footprint needed | Seats | |------|-------------|---------------|------------------|-------| | 2-seater | 90–100 cm | 120 cm | 1.5 m x 1.8 m | 2 (one per side) | | 4-seater | 110–120 cm | 130–140 cm | 2 m x 2 m | 4 (two per side) | | Standard 6-seater | 150–170 cm | 140–160 cm | 3 m x 2.2 m | 6 (three per side) |
The footprint includes clearance of about 40–50 cm behind each bench seat so people can sit down and stand up without pressing against a wall or fence.

Design tricks for tight spaces
A few practical considerations that help a small picnic table work well in a compact space:
Bench seats vs separate chairs
Fixed bench seats save space because there is nothing to push back. Nobody pulls a chair out into a path. The bench is always tucked in at the right distance from the table.
Corner placement
A small bench placed diagonally in a square patio uses the corner space that is often wasted. The triangular area behind the bench becomes invisible dead space rather than an awkward gap.
Narrower tabletop
A standard tabletop is 70–75 cm wide. On a small picnic table, a 60 cm top still gives you room for two plates and a couple of glasses, but saves 10–15 cm of overall width. That can be the difference between fitting and not fitting.
Rounded ends
Square-cut table ends can catch you as you walk past in a narrow space. Rounded or chamfered ends on a compact bench soften the profile and recover a few centimetres of walkway.
Made-to-order for awkward dimensions
This is where a built-to-order bench really earns its place. Off-the-shelf small picnic tables come in one or two stock sizes. If your patio is 1.7 m wide and the stock options are 1.5 m or 2 m, neither works.
We build each picnic bench for your garden from C24 construction-grade timber in our Chelmsford workshop. Tell us the space - length, width, any obstacles - and we will adjust the table length, seat depth, and overall width to fit. We have built benches to slot between raised beds, benches with one short seat and one long, and benches with a cut-out to clear a drainpipe. None of that is possible with off-the-shelf.

Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest picnic bench you can buy?
A 2-seater small picnic table with a 90 cm tabletop is the most compact standard size. It seats two adults comfortably and needs a space of roughly 1.5 m x 1.8 m including clearance. Custom sizes can go smaller if your space demands it.
Will a small picnic bench fit on a balcony?
It depends on the balcony dimensions, but a 2-seater with a 90–100 cm table length and 120 cm overall width will fit most balconies over 1.5 m wide. Check your balcony's weight load rating as well - a solid timber bench weighs 25–35 kg.
Is a 4-seater picnic table big enough for a family?
A 4-seater comfortably seats two adults and two children, or four adults for casual drinks and snacks. For regular family meals with four adults, a 6-seater gives more elbow room - but a 4-seater is a practical compromise when space is the limiting factor.
Can a small picnic bench be made to custom sizes?
Yes. Because we build to order, we can adjust table length, width, and seat depth to match your exact space. This is particularly useful for compact gardens and patios where standard sizes either waste space or do not fit at all.
A bench that fits your space
If your garden or patio is small, your bench should be made to match - not the other way round. Tell us your dimensions and we will build a small picnic table in C24 construction-grade timber that fits precisely. Delivery across Essex and beyond, typically within 7 working days.
