The Best Wood for an Outdoor Picnic Bench in the UK Climate

Which wood is best for a wooden picnic bench in UK weather? Compare pine, larch, oak and redwood for rot resistance, movement and value.

For most buyers in the UK, pressure-treated Scandinavian redwood (Scots pine) or spruce is the best wood for a wooden picnic bench. It handles our wet winters, warm summers, and constant humidity changes well when properly treated, and it costs a fraction of the hardwood alternatives. If budget allows and you want a bench that lasts a generation, European oak is the premium choice - but it is not the only good one.

Timber options ranked for UK weather

The UK climate is tough on outdoor furniture. High rainfall, freeze-thaw cycles in winter, strong UV in summer, and humidity that rarely drops below 60 per cent mean any timber left outside needs to cope with constant moisture movement. Here is how the common options perform:

| Timber | Durability class (EN 350) | Rot resistance (UK conditions) | Movement in service | Typical lifespan (treated) | Relative cost | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | European oak | 2 | High - naturally durable | Moderate | 25–40 years | High | | European larch | 3–4 | Good - heartwood resists rot | Low–moderate | 15–25 years | Medium | | Scandinavian redwood (Scots pine) | 4 (3 when treated) | Good when pressure-treated | Moderate | 15–25 years | Low–medium | | Spruce (C24 graded) | 5 (3 when treated) | Good when pressure-treated | Moderate–high | 15–20 years | Low | | Western red cedar | 2 | High - naturally durable | Low | 20–30 years | High | | Iroko | 1 | Very high | Low | 30–50 years | Very high |

The durability class system matters because it tells you how the raw timber performs without any treatment. Treatment shifts the effective class upwards - which is why a class 5 spruce can perform at class 3 level once pressure-treated.

Why moisture and movement matter in the UK

The UK does not have extreme cold or extreme heat, but it has something worse for timber: relentless moisture cycling. A wooden picnic table left outdoors goes through hundreds of wet-dry cycles every year. Each cycle causes the timber to swell and shrink. Over time, this movement opens joints, raises grain, and creates entry points for rot.

This is why timber selection for UK conditions is different from, say, Mediterranean or Scandinavian climates. In southern Europe, timber dries out and stays dry. In Scandinavia, cold winters slow fungal growth. In the UK, timber stays damp enough for fungi to thrive for most of the year.

The timbers that perform best here share two qualities:

  • Low movement in service - they swell and shrink less with each wet-dry cycle, so joints stay tight and surfaces stay smooth.
  • Good treatability - they absorb pressure treatment deeply, giving protection throughout the cross-section rather than just the surface.

Scandinavian redwood scores well on both counts. It is not the most durable timber in the world, but it responds to treatment better than almost any other common species, and its moderate movement means joints hold well over years of UK weather.

What we choose and why

We build our benches from C24 construction-grade timber - a structural softwood graded for strength, straightness, and consistency. It takes pressure treatment exceptionally well, which is the critical factor for UK longevity.

Could we build in oak or larch? Yes, and we will on request. But for the majority of buyers, treated softwood gives a wooden picnic bench that performs well in UK conditions for fifteen to twenty-five years at an honest price. The annual maintenance is straightforward - a light oil or treatment once a year keeps the bench looking its best and extends its life further.

We are based in Chelmsford, Essex, and we see the same weather our customers do. Every bench we build is specified for the conditions it will actually face - not for a showroom.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most durable wood for an outdoor bench in the UK?

Iroko (durability class 1) and European oak (class 2) are the most naturally durable timbers commonly available in the UK. Both resist rot without treatment, though they cost significantly more than softwood. For most buyers, pressure-treated Scandinavian redwood offers comparable longevity at a fraction of the price.

Does cedar work for picnic benches in the UK?

Western red cedar is naturally durable and resists rot well, but it is a soft, lightweight timber that can dent and mark easily under heavy use. It works well for garden furniture in lighter-use settings but may not stand up to the demands of a busy pub garden or school playground. It is also expensive in the UK, as most is imported.

How long does a treated softwood bench last outdoors?

A pressure-treated softwood bench - pine, spruce, or redwood - will typically last 15–25 years in UK conditions with basic annual maintenance. The pressure treatment protects against rot and insect attack, while annual oiling preserves the appearance and surface integrity.

Is seasoned or kiln-dried timber better for outdoor benches?

For outdoor furniture, timber should be at a moisture content appropriate for outdoor use - typically 18–24 per cent. Kiln-dried timber (often down to 8–12 per cent) can absorb moisture rapidly once placed outdoors, causing swelling and movement. Air-dried or appropriately seasoned timber adjusts more gradually and is generally better suited to outdoor benches.

Can I leave a wooden picnic table out all year in the UK?

Yes, provided it is made from pressure-treated or naturally durable timber. A well-made wooden picnic table is designed to live outdoors. Annual treatment and a breathable cover in winter will extend its life, but it does not need to be stored indoors.
