6-Seater Picnic Benches: Dimensions, Spacing & Who They Suit

6 seater picnic bench dimensions, spacing requirements and who they suit. Exact measurements and made-to-order options from a Chelmsford maker.

A 6 seater picnic bench is the most popular size for UK gardens and pub plots. It's approximately 180 cm long, 140 cm wide including the bench seats, and stands around 75 cm to the tabletop. You'll need a floor area of roughly 280 cm x 280 cm to allow comfortable access on all sides. It's the size that fits the widest range of settings without being too large for a typical garden or too small for a proper meal.

If you're only going to buy one picnic bench, this is almost certainly the right size. Here's exactly what you're looking at in terms of dimensions, space and suitability.

The 6-seater at a glance

| Specification | Typical measurement | |---|---| | Overall length | ~180 cm | | Overall width (inc. seats) | ~140 cm | | Tabletop width | ~70 cm | | Tabletop height | ~75 cm | | Seat height | ~45 cm | | Seat depth | ~25–30 cm | | Weight (C24 construction-grade timber) | ~60–80 kg | | Comfortable seating | 6 adults | | Floor space needed (inc. access) | ~280 cm x 280 cm |

These are representative dimensions for a standard A-frame 6-seater. Our benches are built from C24 construction-grade timber, so they sit at the heavier end of the weight range - that extra weight means stability and solidity rather than a bench that shifts when someone leans on one end.

Exact dimensions and footprint

The 180 cm length gives three adults per side with roughly 60 cm of bench per person - enough elbow room for comfortable eating without feeling cramped. The 140 cm overall width includes both bench seats and the tabletop, with the tabletop itself sitting at around 70 cm wide. That's space for a plate, a drink and a serving dish down the middle.

The footprint to plan for isn't just the bench itself. You need at least 70 cm of clear space behind each bench seat for people to step or swing their legs over. If the bench sits against a wall or fence on one side, add access space to the opposite side only - but remember that everyone entering and leaving will use that one route.

On a patio or decking, measure the actual space before ordering. A 6 seater picnic bench fits most medium gardens comfortably, but "fits" means room to use it, not just room to place it.

Who the 6-seater suits

The six-seater is the default for good reason. It works for:

  • Family gardens. Two adults and two to four children sit comfortably. It doubles as a picnic bench dining table for weekend barbecues and outdoor meals through summer.
  • Small to medium pub gardens. The 180 cm length fits standard pub-garden pitches and seats a full table of six without dominating the space. Most pubs we supply order six-seaters as their main bench size.
  • School playgrounds and nurseries. Six children have ample room. The bench is heavy enough not to be easily moved by young users but still a manageable size for staff to reposition.
  • Cafes and farm shops. A 6-seater on a terrace or in a courtyard offers a proper dining experience without the formality of separate tables and chairs.
  • Holiday lets and Airbnbs. A solid picnic bench in the garden adds a genuine outdoor dining option for guests - more useful than a flimsy folding table and far more resilient to turnover.

If you're seating larger groups regularly, our large picnic bench guide covers 8-seater and extra-long options. For help choosing between sizes, see our full sizing guide.

Made-to-order tweaks for a 6-seater

A standard 6-seater works for most people, but because we build to order, every dimension can be adjusted:

  • Taller tabletop. If the bench is for adults only and standard 75 cm feels low, we can raise it. Useful for longer dining sessions where you want a more table-like posture.
  • Wider or narrower. If your space is deep but short on width, the overall width can be trimmed. If you want a wider tabletop for big platters, that's straightforward too.
  • Wheelchair-accessible gap. We can leave one side open - no bench seat - so a wheelchair user can pull up to the table directly. The frame remains fully stable.
  • Extra-thick tabletop. For commercial settings expecting heavy daily use, we can increase the tabletop thickness for additional durability.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of a 6 seater picnic bench? A standard 6 seater picnic bench is approximately 180 cm long, 140 cm wide (including bench seats), and 75 cm to the tabletop. Seat height is around 45 cm. Exact dimensions vary between makers and can be adjusted on a made-to-order bench.

How heavy is a 6-seater picnic bench? A well-made 6-seater from C24 construction-grade timber weighs approximately 60–80 kg. That weight is a feature - it means the bench stays put in wind and feels solid to sit on. Budget flat-pack versions are lighter but less stable.

Is a 6-seater too big for a small garden? It depends on the garden. You need a floor area of roughly 280 cm x 280 cm including access space. If that fits, you're fine. If it's tight, a 4-seater at 120 cm long is the better choice, or we can build a custom length between the two.

Can a 6-seater picnic bench be used as a dining table? Absolutely. A 6 seater picnic bench makes an excellent outdoor dining table. The 70 cm tabletop width gives room for plates and serving dishes, and the fixed bench seats mean no chairs to arrange or store.
