The right size picnic bench depends on how many people you want to seat and how much space you have. A 4-seater suits compact gardens and patios, a 6 seater picnic bench is the most popular all-rounder for families and small pub plots, and an 8 seater picnic bench handles larger gatherings and commercial settings. As a rule, allow 60 cm of bench length per adult and at least 70 cm of clearance behind each seat for comfortable access.
Below is a full breakdown of dimensions, floor-space requirements and who each size suits, so you can measure your space once and order with confidence.
Quick answer: how many people per bench size
| Bench size | Comfortable seats | Approx. length | Approx. width (inc. seats) | Total floor space needed (inc. access) | |---|---|---|---|---| | 4-seater | 4 adults | ~120 cm | ~140 cm | ~220 cm x 280 cm | | 6-seater | 6 adults | ~180 cm | ~140 cm | ~280 cm x 280 cm | | 8-seater | 8 adults | ~240 cm | ~140 cm | ~340 cm x 280 cm |
These are typical dimensions for a standard A-frame rectangular bench. Exact measurements vary between makers and can be adjusted on a made-to-order bench. The floor space column includes the bench itself plus clearance on all sides for people to get in and out.
How to measure your space before buying
Before settling on a size, measure your actual space - not just where the bench will sit, but the area around it. Here's what to account for:
- Bench footprint. The length and width of the bench itself, including the leg frame.
- Access clearance. At least 70 cm behind each bench seat so people can step or swing their legs over comfortably. More if the bench is against a wall on one side - you'll need all access from the other.
- Walking space. If the bench sits on a path, patio or pub garden with foot traffic, add 90–120 cm on one side for people to pass without squeezing past seated diners.
- Parasol space. If you're adding a parasol, check the canopy radius won't foul walls, fences or other furniture when open.
A tape measure and five minutes in the garden will save you from ordering a bench that technically fits but feels cramped to use.
Per-person spacing rules of thumb
These are the numbers we use in the workshop when specifying a bench:
| Measurement | Rule of thumb | |---|---| | Bench length per adult | 60 cm (comfortable elbow room) | | Bench length per child (8–12 years) | 40–45 cm | | Seat depth | 25–30 cm for comfort | | Clearance behind seat for access | 70 cm minimum | | Tabletop width | 70–80 cm for plates, serving dishes and elbows |
If you regularly seat larger adults or want generous elbow room, add 10 cm per person. A picnic bench dining table that feels spacious is always better than one that technically fits the right number of people but feels tight.
4 vs 6 vs 8 seater: dimensions and who each suits
4-seater - the compact option
At around 120 cm long, the 4-seater is the smallest standard size. It seats four adults - two per side - and fits patios, balconies, small gardens and tight pub corners where a larger bench wouldn't work. It's also a good choice for households that mostly seat two to three people but want space for an occasional guest.
6 seater picnic bench - the all-rounder
The 6 seater picnic bench is the most popular size we build, and the most popular size sold across the UK. At roughly 180 cm long, it seats six adults with proper elbow room and fits comfortably in a medium garden or a standard pub-garden pitch. It works equally well as a family dining table for weekend barbecues or as a picnic bench dining table on a restaurant terrace. If you're unsure which size to go for, this is the safe bet.

8 seater picnic bench - for larger groups
The 8 seater picnic bench runs to about 240 cm and seats eight adults across four per side. It suits larger gardens, events, school playgrounds and commercial settings where you want maximum seating from a single piece. The extra length means more timber and a heavier frame - stability matters at this span, so look for thicker legs and a properly braced A-frame.
For events and commercial venues, our large picnic bench guide covers extra-long options and what to consider for high-traffic use.
Mixing sizes for venues
Pubs, schools, cafes and event spaces often do best with a mix of sizes rather than a single repeated bench. A typical layout might use:
- 6-seaters as the main seating - the best balance of capacity and footprint.
- 4-seaters in tighter corners, against walls, or for smaller groups.
- 8-seaters as centrepiece tables for large parties or communal dining.
Mixing sizes creates a more natural, varied feel and makes better use of irregular spaces. If you're ordering for a venue, we can help plan a layout based on your floor plan. Browse our benches by size to see the options.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a 6 seater picnic bench? A standard 6 seater picnic bench is approximately 180 cm long, 140 cm wide (including seats), and around 75 cm to the tabletop. These dimensions vary slightly between makers. A made-to-order bench can be adjusted to your exact requirements.
How much space do I need for a picnic bench? Allow the bench footprint plus at least 70 cm clearance behind each seat for access. For a 6-seater, that means a total area of roughly 280 cm x 280 cm. If the bench is against a wall, add the clearance to the open side only.
Can I get a picnic bench between standard sizes? Yes. A made-to-order bench can be built to any length - 150 cm, 200 cm, or whatever fits your space. Standard sizes are starting points, not fixed options.
What's the biggest picnic bench you can get? Standard production typically tops out at 8-seater (240 cm). A maker building to order can go longer - 300 cm or more - though stability and timber weight become important considerations at that length. We build extra-long benches regularly for pubs and events.
Is a 4-seater big enough for a family? For a family of four with younger children, yes - comfortably. For a family of four adults, it works but is snug. If you have the space, a 6-seater gives everyone more elbow room and handles guests without feeling crowded.
