Garden Picnic Benches: Bringing the Table Outdoors

A garden picnic bench turns your outdoor space into a dining area all year round. Sizes, placement and made-to-order options explained.

A garden picnic bench is the simplest way to turn an outdoor space into a proper dining area. Unlike separate tables and chairs that scatter across the lawn, a picnic bench for garden use keeps everything together - table surface and seating in one solid unit, ready for breakfast, a barbecue or an evening drink without any setup. We build ours to order from C24 construction-grade timber in Chelmsford, so yours can be sized and finished to suit your garden exactly.

Why a garden picnic bench suits outdoor living

There's a reason the picnic bench has outlasted every garden furniture trend going. It works.

A garden picnic table gives you a generous eating surface with seating for four, six or eight people, all in a footprint barely larger than the table itself. There's no dragging chairs in and out of a shed, no stacking at the end of summer, no cushions to rescue when it rains. The bench stays put through every season.

For families, that permanence is the real appeal. A solid timber bench becomes the default spot for meals, homework, games, tea - the outdoor equivalent of a kitchen table. It's where people gather without being asked.

And because it's one piece of furniture rather than a set of five or six, it actually takes up less space than most garden dining sets while seating the same number of people.

Placement: lawn, patio or decking

Where you put your garden picnic bench affects how well it performs and how long it lasts. Each surface has trade-offs.

| Surface | Pros | Cons | Tips | |---|---|---|---| | Lawn | Soft underfoot, natural look, no foundation needed | Legs can sink in wet ground, grass dies underneath | Use feet pads or a gravel pad beneath; rotate position yearly | | Patio / slabs | Level, stable, drains well | Hard surface can scratch; bench may slide | Bolt-down fixings or rubber feet; check bench sits level | | Decking | Looks great, already raised and level | Weight can stress weak decking; trapped moisture underneath | Check decking can bear the load; allow airflow beneath bench | | Gravel | Good drainage, informal look | Uneven surface, legs may wobble | Compact and level the gravel first; consider ground anchors |

If you're placing a bench on a sloped garden, we can adjust leg lengths so the tabletop sits level - one of the practical advantages of a made-to-order approach.

Sizes for typical UK gardens

Most UK gardens fall between 40 and 100 square metres. That's enough for a picnic bench, but size matters - too large and you lose your lawn; too small and it feels cramped when the family sits down.

| Garden size | Recommended bench | Table top length | Seats | |---|---|---|---| | Small (under 40 m²) | 4-seater | ~120 cm | 4 | | Medium (40–80 m²) | 6-seater | ~150 cm | 6 | | Large (80+ m²) | 8-seater | ~180 cm | 8 |

A 6-seater is the most popular choice for family gardens - it comfortably seats four adults and two children for everyday meals, with room for extras when friends come round. If your garden is on the smaller side, have a look at our guide to small picnic benches for compact gardens for more detail.

Allow at least 80 cm of clearance behind each bench seat so people can swing their legs over without backing into a fence or flower bed.

Made to order to suit your space

This is where a built-to-order garden picnic bench differs from something pulled off a shelf. Every garden is different, and off-the-peg sizes are a compromise at best.

We can adjust table length, bench depth, overall height and timber finish to match your space and your taste. Want a 140 cm top instead of a standard 150 cm because your patio is exactly 3 metres wide? No problem. Prefer an oiled natural finish over pressure-treated green? Done.

If you're thinking about alfresco dining as a regular part of your routine - not just a sunny-day treat - it's worth getting the dimensions right from the start. For advice on keeping your bench looking good season after season, our care and treatment guide covers everything from oiling to winter storage.

Frequently asked questions

Can a garden picnic bench stay outside all year?

Yes. A properly treated timber bench is designed to live outdoors through all seasons. Ours are built from pressure-treated C24 construction-grade timber, which resists rot and insect damage. An annual oil or treatment will keep it looking fresh, but the structure will last years even without it.

How heavy is a garden picnic bench?

A 6-seater in solid timber typically weighs between 45 and 60 kg, depending on the timber species and dimensions. That's heavy enough to stay put in wind, but two people can still move it if you want to reposition it.

Do I need a base or foundation for a picnic bench on grass?

Not necessarily, but a simple gravel pad or a few paving slabs under the legs will stop them sinking into soft ground over winter. It also improves drainage and helps the timber last longer.

What finish options are available?

We offer pressure-treated timber as standard, plus oil finishes in natural, dark oak and other tones. Painted finishes in any colour are also available on request. Every bench is finished before delivery - no assembly or treatment needed on your end.

How long does delivery take?

Standard lead time is 7 working days from order. We deliver across Essex and beyond. If you need a specific delivery date, let us know when you order and we'll do our best to accommodate it.

Your garden, your bench

A garden picnic bench should fit your space, not the other way round. Tell us your garden's dimensions, the surface you're working with, and how many people you want to seat - and we'll build a bench that belongs there. See the full range on our garden benches page to get started.
