Picnic Benches With Parasol Holes: Shade for Sunny Gardens

Everything you need to know about a garden picnic bench with a parasol hole. Sizing, retrofit vs built-in and made-to-order options.

A garden picnic bench with a parasol hole lets you add shade exactly where you need it - over the table, where people are actually sitting. It's a simple feature that makes a real difference on hot days, turning a south-facing bench from something you avoid at midday into somewhere you can eat lunch comfortably. We build parasol holes into our benches as a standard option, drilled to fit your parasol's pole size during the build.

Why a parasol hole matters on a picnic bench for garden use

Freestanding parasols and shade sails work, but they have drawbacks. A freestanding parasol base takes up floor space, creates a trip hazard, and still puts the shade slightly off-centre unless you position it perfectly. A shade sail needs fixing points and blocks the view overhead.

A parasol through the centre of the tabletop solves all of this. The bench's own weight - typically 45–60 kg for a 6-seater - anchors the parasol far more securely than a standalone base. The shade falls directly over the table and seats. And when the sun moves or you don't need shade, you simply close the parasol or lift it out. Nothing to dismantle, nothing to store.

For families with young children, sun protection during outdoor meals is especially important. A garden picnic bench with a built-in parasol hole means shade is always available without any setup - a genuine practical advantage over separate solutions.

Sizing the parasol hole to your parasol

Getting the hole diameter right matters more than people expect. Too tight and the pole won't fit. Too loose and the parasol wobbles, leans, or drops through in wind.

| Parasol pole diameter | Recommended hole diameter | Common parasol type | |---|---|---| | 33 mm | 38 mm | Small market parasol | | 38 mm | 43 mm | Standard garden parasol | | 48 mm | 53 mm | Large tilting parasol | | 58 mm | 63 mm | Heavy-duty commercial parasol |

The general rule: drill the hole 5 mm wider than the pole diameter. This allows the pole to slide in and out easily while keeping it snug enough to stand straight.

If you already own a parasol, measure the pole diameter before ordering your bench. If you're buying both together, a 38 mm pole / 43 mm hole is the most common combination for domestic garden parasols in the UK.

We fit a rubber grommet or cap as standard so the hole is sealed when the parasol isn't in use - no rainwater pooling on the tabletop.

Retrofit vs built-in: which is better?

If you already have a picnic bench for garden use without a parasol hole, you might wonder whether you can drill one yourself. You can, but there are good reasons to have it done during the build instead.

Built-in (during manufacture):

  • Hole is drilled before the finish is applied, so the exposed timber inside the hole is fully treated and sealed.
  • Positioning is precise - dead centre of the tabletop, clear of the internal frame.
  • A grommet or cap is fitted as standard.
  • No risk of splitting the timber, because we drill with the right bit at the right speed on a stable surface.

Retrofit (after purchase):

  • Exposed timber inside the hole won't be pressure-treated, creating a potential rot point.
  • Risk of the drill bit wandering or the timber splitting, especially on thicker tabletops.
  • Harder to position precisely on an assembled bench.
  • You'll need to seal the exposed timber yourself with a timber treatment.

In short: if you know you want a parasol hole, have it built in. It's one of those details that costs almost nothing to include during the build but is fiddly and compromise-prone to add later.

Made to order with parasol provision

Because every garden picnic bench we build is made to order from C24 construction-grade timber, adding a parasol hole is straightforward. Just tell us the pole diameter of your parasol - or confirm you'd like the standard 43 mm hole - and we'll include it.

We can also offset the hole position if you need the parasol off-centre for a specific reason - perhaps to shade one side of the bench where the sun hits hardest, or to avoid a platter in the middle of the table. It's a made-to-order detail that mass-produced benches can't offer.

Frequently asked questions

Can any picnic bench have a parasol hole added?

Most can, but it's far better to include it during the build. A hole drilled after manufacture exposes untreated timber inside the cut, which can become a moisture entry point and rot risk. If you're ordering new, ask for the hole upfront.

What size parasol hole do I need?

Measure your parasol pole diameter and add 5 mm. The most common UK garden parasol has a 38 mm pole, which needs a 43 mm hole. If in doubt, let us know your parasol make and model and we'll confirm the right size.

Does the parasol hole weaken the tabletop?

No. A correctly drilled hole in a solid timber tabletop has no meaningful effect on strength. The hole is typically 40–60 mm across in a tabletop that's 70 cm or wider - it's a tiny proportion of the total surface.

Can I plug the hole when the parasol isn't in use?

Yes. We fit a rubber grommet or timber plug as standard so the hole is sealed when empty. This prevents rainwater collecting on the tabletop and keeps the opening clean.

How much extra does a parasol hole cost?

It's a minimal addition to the build cost - far less than buying a separate freestanding parasol base. Contact us through our garden benches page for exact pricing with your bench specification.

Shade where it matters

If your garden catches the sun, a parasol hole is one of the easiest upgrades you can make to a picnic bench. Tell us your parasol size when you order and we'll build it in - no retrofit, no compromise. See the full range on our garden benches page to get started.

Ready to order your bench?

Tell us the size and finish you need. We'll confirm pricing, build time, and delivery - no obligation.
