The best picnic bench for garden use depends less on the bench itself and more on the garden it's going into. A compact courtyard, a sloped lawn, a south-facing patio and a large family garden all call for different sizes, shapes and placement. This guide matches garden types to bench recommendations so you can choose with confidence. Every bench we mention is one we build to order from C24 construction-grade timber in our Chelmsford workshop.
How your garden type changes the right bench
A picnic bench for garden use is a long-term addition - it's heavy, it stays put, and it becomes a focal point whether you planned it that way or not. Getting the wrong size or shape means either a cramped garden or a bench that sits awkwardly in too much empty space.
The key factors are:
- Available footprint - not just the bench dimensions but clearance for legs swinging over the seat (80 cm minimum behind each side).
- Surface type - lawn, patio, decking or gravel all affect stability and drainage.
- Sun exposure - a south-facing garden may need a parasol hole; a shaded corner won't.
- Slope - even a gentle gradient means uneven legs unless you account for it.
- How you use it - daily family meals, weekend entertaining, or a quiet reading spot all suggest different sizes.
The right garden picnic bench by garden type
This table is the quick-reference version. Details on each type follow below.
| Garden type | Recommended bench | Table top length | Shape | Key consideration | |---|---|---|---|---| | Small courtyard (under 25 m²) | 4-seater | ~120 cm | Rectangular | Tight clearance - measure twice | | Narrow town garden (3–4 m wide) | 4-seater | ~120 cm | Rectangular | Width is the constraint, not length | | Medium family garden (40–80 m²) | 6-seater | ~150 cm | Rectangular or round | Most popular size; fits most layouts | | Large lawn (80+ m²) | 8-seater | ~180 cm | Rectangular | Space for big gatherings | | Patio or terrace | 6-seater | ~150 cm | Rectangular | Bolt-down fixings recommended | | Decking | 4- or 6-seater | 120–150 cm | Rectangular | Check load capacity of decking | | Sloped garden | Any size | Custom | Rectangular | Adjusted leg lengths essential | | Courtyard with raised beds | 4-seater | ~120 cm | Round or rectangular | Round uses space more efficiently |
Small courtyard or balcony garden
Space is the constraint. A 4-seater bench with a 120 cm tabletop fits into a courtyard as narrow as 2.5 metres with enough clearance to sit comfortably. Keep the bench against a wall on one side if space is very tight - we can build a wall-side bench with seating on three sides instead of four. For more ideas, read our guide to small picnic benches for compact gardens.
Medium family garden
This is where a 6-seater garden picnic bench earns its place. A 150 cm tabletop seats four adults and two children for everyday meals, stretching to six adults when friends visit. Place it centrally on the lawn or off to one side on a patio - either works. This is the most common size we build.
Large garden or grounds
An 8-seater gives you room for proper gatherings - Sunday lunches, birthday parties, or just a big family. The 180 cm tabletop means platters, serving bowls and a full set of plates fit without anyone eating on their lap. If you have the space, consider two 6-seaters rather than one 8 - it gives you more flexible seating arrangements.
Dealing with slopes, soft ground and decking
Not every garden is flat and paved. Here's how to handle the awkward ones.
Sloped gardens are more common than people think, especially in Essex where gentle gradients are typical. A standard bench placed on a slope will rock and the tabletop won't be level - drinks slide, plates tip. Because we build to order, we can adjust individual leg lengths so the tabletop sits perfectly horizontal even on a gradient. Measure the slope across the bench footprint (a spirit level and a tape measure will do it) and we'll take care of the rest.
Soft ground - heavy clay or waterlogged lawns - can cause legs to sink unevenly over a wet winter. A gravel pad beneath the bench, or simple paving slabs under each leg, solves this. It also keeps the timber off damp soil, which extends its life.
Decking looks great with a picnic bench on it, but check the structure can take the weight. A 6-seater in solid timber weighs 45–60 kg before anyone sits on it. Standard domestic decking boards on 400 mm joist centres will handle it, but older or thinner decking may need reinforcing underneath. Allow airflow beneath the bench to prevent moisture trapping.
Made to fit awkward gardens
This is the real advantage of a built-to-order picnic bench for garden use. If your space doesn't suit a standard size - perhaps your patio is 2.8 metres wide instead of 3, or you need a bench 10 cm shorter to clear a raised bed - we make it to your measurements.
Custom doesn't mean expensive. It means a bench that actually fits, rather than one you have to compromise around. Browse our garden bench range to see standard options, or get in touch with your dimensions for a bespoke quote.
Frequently asked questions
What size picnic bench fits a small garden?
A 4-seater with a 120 cm tabletop is the best fit for gardens under 40 square metres. It seats four comfortably while leaving enough space for planting, a path and general movement. Allow 80 cm clearance behind each bench seat.
Can you build a picnic bench for a sloped garden?
Yes. We adjust leg lengths to suit the gradient so the tabletop sits level. Measure the height difference across where the bench will sit and include it when you order. There's no extra charge for this adjustment.
Is a round or rectangular bench better for a small garden?
A round bench uses space more efficiently in square courtyards because there are no corners sticking out. For long, narrow gardens, a rectangular bench makes better use of the available length. Both are available in our garden bench range.
How much space does a picnic bench need around it?
Allow at least 80 cm behind each bench seat for comfortable leg clearance, plus the bench footprint itself. A 6-seater typically needs a total area of about 3 m by 2.5 m including clearance.
